Shape of the Book is a 20-page visual booklet with a wrap-around cover. The text is sourced from a chapter from Alberto Manguel's A History of Reading, published in 1996. The content covers the evolution in publication design from the Gutenberg printing press to the Penguin Publishing Group which is reflected in the photographs. Photos were taken in rare book rooms, libraries, antiquarian book fairs, museums, and book stores in San Francisco, CA and San Antonio, TX.
Growing up, my father encouraged by healthy love of books. He would bring me along on his weekly library ciruit, used book store visits, and sing off on my annotated Scholastic Book Fair catalogs from school. Years later, through designing this book, I learned the intricacies of the history of publication design. Now flipping through a book for inspiration, research, or leisure is enhanced by the years of innovation that make modern publications possible.
Pages are saddle-stiched with embroidery floss. The cover is tiled with paper medical tape.
